I went out to the pond earlier just to make sure, but I was certain that the bird had left for good. I walked up the berm, looked at the back of the boat, and it wasn't there. I looked into the water to see if there were any good reflections and heard a strange noise from across the pond. The bird was catching a small catfish (maybe 7 inches long). It was obviously uncomfortable with my being there so I took these pictures and left. The next thing I buy will be a camera. This is a very interesting bird. Its head and beak movements are almost dance-like (its legs rarely move), but mainly it's just a story that I tell because I don't have any credible photos, or even audio. These are the best photos yet. It looks almost birdlike. And the small shiny thing that seems to hover in front of its face is a fish held in a long beak that doesn't show up. Wildlife photography is pretty exciting, but mine seems to require a lot of explanation.
