Zone of Greatest Predation
I was just in the backyard playing with Kilo and was once again amazed by the Red-Winged Blackbirds. They have maintained control of the pond for 5 years (next month), and never let up. I watched for probably an hour and they held against an almost endless assault by an astonishing variety of birds. Could there be 100 different species of birds working the pond? That's what it seems like. I can only recognize a small number - the Blackbirds, Quail, Doves (at least 3 types), Mockingbirds, Purple Martens, Red Tailed Hawk, Kestrels, and Sparrows. The rest are just flashes of color, but distinct enough that I can tell that they are different birds. And even with all of the birds fighting for hunting territory, there are still lots of mosquitoes. They don't bother Kilo or even me, but Buddy was covered with bites by the time he left yesterday. Extremely hot and we are under a severe storm watch for the next couple of hours.
