Bird Watch

On Friday, Buddy was trying to pull something out of the herb bed and when we investigated, it was a fledgling Ring Necked Dove. The birds first appeared in this area in the late 1980's and these look like the African species, but I don't know if they are the same. The bird was in good shape, but couldn't fly. Buddy wouldn't try to hurt it, but his love is rough and frail things don't generally survive long, so I tried to find whatever nest it had come out of. No luck all day and in the late evening Camron and I put a sort of nest together and put it in a tree. Camron checked on it every few minutes and collected an assortment of toys that he felt young birds might enjoy. He also had plans to make it his good friend so that some day if he ever, for instance, breaks his arm, the bird will be there to help him. Anyway the next morning the bird was gone. This morning as Kilo and I were entering the yard after our walk she alerted on the herb bed, parted some of the plants, and there was a fledgling Ring Necked Dove. They apparently live there. I've looked at some of the literature and so far none of it has noted where they nest (ground or tree), but this could be common for them. Kilo has left it alone so far but she doesn't really like for anything to be in her yard.
