New Bird
Yesterday evening when I returned home, Kilo was circling the largest tree in the backyard, watching up in the tree and very agitated. It was the last of the twilight and hard to make out anything but shapes, but as I approached the tree a dark very large bird with a fish in its mouth took off. I thought briefly that it might be the Bittern because it can appear large as it takes off but this bird was very large. I didn't think more about it because we constantly get brief, one-time glimpses of strange animals stopping in for a meal, but a few minutes ago I walked out to the pond to take pictures and look around and startled a Great Blue Heron out of the reeds on the East side. As it took off it presented the same silhouette that appeared last night. These birds are massive compared to the Bittern and they've always been here in pairs before (not necessarily male/female, just two of them). They might be more approachable early in the morning.
