Monday, Tuesday, Thursday --
Oddly enough, I'm not really sure what day it is. Not something I've ever really noticed anyway. Got the first produce out of the garden yesterday evening, 1 tomato, 2 Big Jim long green chilis, and 1 large bell pepper. Luckily we aren't a hunter/gatherer clan because this might indicate a long, hard Winter and maybe our last one, but it's okay for such a small garden. Linda said that the peppers were slightly hot but didn't comment on the tomato. When we were children and our mom gardened I had no interest. They had to force me to pull weeds or water and as I look back, all of us were more menace than assistance and even deadly to plants. The main thing I remember is that she always grew the same kinds of plants year after year, and some, especially the small yellow bell-shaped tomatoes, were incredibly good. I now realize that she had heirloom seeds that her family had maintained for many years. After she died my sister managed to salvage some of them (not the yellow tomatoes) but I managed to lose (or eat or smoke) any that got near me. I rarely regret being spoiled and self-absorbed, but the loss of the flavor of that yellow tomato would almost cause me to. I should have been more responsible, but I'll make it up in other ways. Next year I'm planning a big garden, and I'll create my own heirloom seed line - minus the squash, green beans, and okra. The Eggplants are still blooming, but no clue as to what happens next. They maybe should start.
