Pond News

The temperature didn't change much through the day from last night. It may have reached 34 degrees. Nothing moving in the water but I still like the colors around the berm. Even the small vivid green patches of algae stand out in the general greyness.

Winter Storm

Our first winter storm is steadily engulfing the State and it could be intense even in this area. It snowed here a few weeks ago but we have had 70 and 80 degree days since then. The pond seems suspended today. I didn't see any fish moving around.

Intelligent Koi

They obviously are. They were waiting at the feeding ring this morning so I fed them. They are actually beautiful fish but I have seriously resented their invading the pond and have captured and given away great numbers of them. That's sort of a lie because they are really hard to catch but I have captured a few. I started out not liking them because they are an invader nuisance once they become established in ponds or lakes that provide edible fish (perch, catfish, etc.). I only know rumors that Koi are inedible, but I know for sure that these catfish are since the thought of eating one of them doesn't appeal to me or anyone who has access to the pond. Nobody eats them (maybe we shouldn't have given them names).

Another beautiful day in the mid 70's again but a cold front is supposed to move in tonight

Koi Intelligence?

I fed the fish for two days in a row, mainly to assure myself that the catfish still exist (and they do) but the behavior of the Koi turned out to be interesting. They are usually very skittish - probably because we have had extensive Koi eradication campaigns - but now seem to watch me when I move around the pond. Yesterday they all stayed on the surface for as long as Ron and I were out there. I fed them before he left so they should be really friendly today.

Almost Winter

In the low 70's today and will be again tomorrow. I fed the fish this morning and they are still there, just slower.

December?

Perfect day, beautiful clouds. In the low 70's. This morning at 2 AM I woke up and remembered I had left the pond running. It was overflowing when I got out there but not a big deal since it floods the breezeway. The water is completely clear all the way to the bottom and the overflow skimmed a lot of the willow leaves off of the surface.

Lots of Wind and Wind-blown Debris

I spent a while cleaning willow leaves and branches out of the pond and need to take the boat out to clean more. It was just too cold today. Beautiful cirrus clouds floated over all day and they just started bunching up to create these pictures.
